I worked at Intermountain Healthcare full-time (More than a year)

Pros

The benefits working for this company are great! The facilities are clean and well maintained and the physicians are very knowledgeable in their fields.

Cons

They pay is not as high as other areas in the country.

Advice to Management

Management sometimes put unrealistic expectations on employees, particularly when they are unwilling to understand what our jobs are and how the patients are the priority and not the bottom line on reports.

I have been working at Intermountain Healthcare full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great place to work. Good people to work with. A lot of opportunities for training and advancement.

    Cons

Could probably get paid more working for another company in the area, especially since Intermountain is a "not for profit" company.

I have been working at Intermountain Healthcare full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

*Company has never laid off IT employees.
*Plenty of diverse IT projects to work on to enhance your interests and skills.
*Diverse IT workforce includes lots of local people, plenty of foreign workers, and young, old, male, female workers.
*Pay and benefits are competitive, but since it is a non-profit you can probably get better pay and benefits elsewhere. However, the company does have a good 401K/Roth 401K plan and a pension which you get vested in after 6 years. Pensions are rare these days, so this is a huge plus.
*Family friendly work environment for most projects, although some exceptions exist.
*Encouragement of workers to move to different projects.
*If you are looking for a good, stable job, and want to stay put for many years., this company is for you.

    Cons

*Advancement opportunities are difficult to come by. This might be due to a low turnover rate, which is probably a plus since people stay put at an employer they are happy with.
*A little too much process for some projects - the FDA regulates some healthcare software.
*Internal processes and bureaucracy can bee too much sometimes.
*Some non-IT management can negatively influence IT projects for the worse. For example, it has just been recently that jeans were allowed with a more relaxed dress code. Some projects still have a non-jeans dress code - this is dark ages stuff for modern-day IT.
*Some projects have aging, legacy projects and technologies.
*IHC is a healthcare organization, so although they value IT, technology is not their core product, so some projects/people are not too savvy and open to technology being an enabler of innovation and ideas, although this is decreasing.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to be even more competitive with the modern-day IT workforce. IHC is still behind the times with IT workplace culture, relaxed work environment, dress code, perks (such as free lunches), flexible schedules etc. Improvements have been made, but much more needs to be done to stay competitive with modern-day technology companies. Non-IT upper management needs to let IT workers be themselves and stay out of the way. Healthcare and IT are done in vastly different ways, and management needs to realize this. More trust with IT is still needed.
