I have been working at International Rescue Committee full-time (More than a year)

Pros

-- Great mission
-- Money raised really goes to the people being served
-- Very talented, dedicated staff members
-- Staff is very aware of and dedicated to the mission
-- Good benefits
-- Generous sick time

Cons

-- Very top heavy organization with many directors, associate directors, deputy directors, etc.
-- Large salary gap between the higher ups and those lower down with little opportunity for middle ground
-- Very bureaucratic with many levels of to go through before things get done
-- Heavy reliance on consultants
-- Power struggles at the top
-- Little connection of HQ staff to the field.

Advice to Management

-- Rely less on consultants
-- Trust employees more to do what you hired them to do
-- Make promotions more transparent
-- Value education more when hiring
-- Make pay more equitable among employees with the same level of education and experience.

I worked at International Rescue Committee as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

You get a chance to help people that really need your help.

    Cons

Too much red tape and if you intern there, they'll never consider you for a job openning, which is absolutely and profoundly misguided on their behalf.

    Advice to Management

    Come down and play.

I worked at International Rescue Committee as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I loved what they were doing: helping refugees to adapt to the new environment, if you share their vision, most likely you will be satisfied with volunteering for this organization. If your passion is helping people, if you're thinking about going to Peace Corp. that would be great way to kind of prepare yourself beforehand.

    Cons

The office I volunteered for was hardly organized, many times my schedule was postponed or student could just not show up at all.
