I worked at J. C. Penney full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Generally good corporate environment, mostly good colleagues, decent benefits, average salary range. Work-life balance mostly good except during high volume holiday sales season. Vacation time based on career experience rather than seniority limitations. Some leadership was good, some not so much.

Cons

Most problems were directly related to poor old school management attitudes. Despite 'new blood' executives, many decisions were uninformed and detrimental to productivity and morale. Communication and transparency were superficial at best. Training and genuine recognition was mostly limited to favored senior personnel.

Advice to Management

They've lost a lot of top notch talent in the past couple of years. Blaming the economy only explains so much, and justifies very little. The executives may be the 'brains', but the employee's are the body, and a brain without a body isn't going to live very long.

I have been working at J. C. Penney part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed working with and helping people that I would not have talked to otherwise. Retail stores are made up of very diverse employees from those who are working for their first pay check to those who have been there for years and moved up the ranks. Compensation was probably average for a retailer of their size, training was on-the-job and a few videos. I did not need the benefits.

    Cons

Some of the management should not be in those positions. Many supervisory/management positions are filled with long-term employees. This can sometimes be a great thing, as they learned from the bottom... but not in my case. Very nice, but highly unprofessional work environment.

    Advice to Management

Some need to take their positions more seriously. Poor actions and unprofessionalism promotes bad examples for your entire team. In most cases, employees are an extension of their managers. This was not always a good thing in front of customers.
