I have been working at Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services part-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Very rewarding work. You get a chance to make a real difference in the clients' lives.

Cons

The work can be stressful at times and there are days that are busier than others which may not allow staff members enough time to get paperwork done during their scheduled hours.

    Doesn't Recommend
    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Decent benefits. Some departments and supervisors are liberal about using sick or vacation time (max of 70 sick days and 5 weeks vacation time can be accrued). Employees are often able to have flexible schedules unless you are required by your position to do shiftwork. Many people stay with the agency for decades. You have the opportunity to engage in meaningful, but sometimes emotionally exhausting work. You may also find genuinely supportive and friendly colleagues. There are various opportunities to engage with executive management. They seem far more accessible than in some other organizations.

    Cons

The agency is large and unwieldy at times, operating in too many sites across NYC and Westchester. Each department and program has a different working environment. This leads to a lot of inconsistency in people's experiences. The agency as a whole seems to struggle with diversity and retaining top talent at all levels. Compensation is poor overall but for social workers, in particular. However, SWs also have the best opportunities for advancement. If you can, negotiate a higher rate of pay to begin with and you'll be better off in the long run. Cost-of-living raises can be frozen in a poor economy. There is a push to use Fee For Service workers more and more. Health insurance and vacation time are not available to you during the first 3 months (probationary period), though vacation time will acrrue. Benefits are not available unless you work 20+ hours/week and they cost more if you are PT. There is always the possibility of a reduction in force near the end of the fiscal year.

    Advice to Management

Stay focused. Stay in touch with your employee's needs as much as your client needs and you will be better off in the long run.
