I worked at John Hancock full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

- Management is frequently available to speak and the open door policy is real
- Youth environment from the pre-merger company
- Nice new building
- Learning was fostered for many new and young employees

Cons

- Pay is not competitive
-Significant advancement requires move to Canada
- Waterfront location was not an easy commute
-Some issues with Upper Management/C Suite executives who have damaged the business for their own gain

Advice to Management

Pay a little bit more

I worked at John Hancock as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Free coffee on each floor, occasional opportunity to telecommute from home, flexible work schedule (come in early/leave early, come in late/leave late), lots of opportunities to learn

    Cons

Major push by the company to replace permanent employees with contracted employees so that they do not have to pay any benefits (medical, PTO, 401K, bonus, etc.). The company also is beginning to outsource some of its claims processing and help desk functions to the Phillipines where it only costs them a fraction to employ people compared to here in the US. Finally, the computer technology that the company uses as well as the laptops and desktops that it has for its employees is very old and outdated.
