I worked at Judge Baker Children's Center full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Working at Judge Baker give one the opportunity to add "Harvard Medical School" to one's resume. Although my experience was sour in the day-to-day, the realistic exposure to the sad side of academia was valuable.

Cons

Post-docs receive little management training and as a result end up as terrible managers. Politics and cattiness dominate the research department.

Advice to Management

Post-docs need to learn how to manage employees. Considering that they hold PhDs in psychology, they demonstrate a very rudimentary understanding of how to motivate people and provide an enjoyable work environment. Give your employees meaningful experiences and set realistic expectations.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

A nice balance of clinical and research work in child psychology. JBCC has a great outpatient clinic, the CECT, which cares for each client and uses only evidence based treatment models.

    Cons

Transport can be difficult in winter.

    Advice to Management

Keep on working the way you are and welcoming staff into the JBCC community.

I worked at Judge Baker Children's Center (More than a year)

    Pros

Outpatient program had a collaborative team environment with helpful and supportive supervisors. Program offered good training environment and exposure to diverse clientele.

    Cons

Difficult to stick to a 40-hour work week due to need to meet clinical hour expectations (note: this con is not specific to JBCC but more reflective of the nature of outpatient clinical positions working with kids)

    Advice to Management

No specific advice for changes to make. I had an enjoyable experience and am grateful for the opportunity to have worked at JBCC.
