I worked at Kaiser Permanente as a contractor (More than 3 years)

Pros

Acceptable offices. Working hours are agreeable.

In its core business, health services (as opposed to the IT side of the firm), the firm has made important advances. It's still a step ahead of the industry in leveraging its EMR for such.

Cons

Directors at KPIT have to primarily focus on politics to keep their career viable. Doing the right thing for the company has to be secondary.

The company outsources most project management and technical work, with many contractors brought onboard for up brief spans. Turnover is high, and competence is developed, then sent packing. Further, management focuses on keeping contractor rates low, so mediocrity among contractors is common.

Management sticks to outdated and inflexible procedures, such as waterfall, and anything forgotten procedurally will be used as a club by other units for purely political ends.

Innovation is stifled through incentives, procedures, politics and culture.

Advice to Management

Build innovation-oriented units that are protected from the current organization, then reduce the role of the latter over time.

    Pros

Great people to work with, good salary and wonderful benefits.

    Cons

HR processes are bad! So many things to fix. Almost every process needs re-work and updating. All departments function as silos, everyone does things differently. IT support is so slow and too staffed too thin.

    Advice to Management

You're spending way too much money on contractors when we miss out on hiring the "best of the best" because we have to let a good employee go after one year. We waste time, money, re-training....makes no sense at all. Get rid of the unions, the only purpose they serve is to keep under-performing employees employed and managers extremely frustrated that we cannot manage a poor performer out of the system quickly. It's a horrible process and is a downfall on Kaiser's part. I understand wanting to help people find a great career path, but not at the expense of dragging teams down.

I worked at Kaiser Permanente full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Model for healthcare in USA today. Forward thinking, leader in integrated health care,

    Cons

Too much power given to the unions, this has led to less than quality RN care in many instances by promoting, rewarding poor nursing judgement, poorer quality Charge RNs in many instances.

    Advice to Management

Take a look at your NUNI employees and their overall role in the organization, they need to be treated with more respect.
