I have been working at Kaiser Permanente as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

The people there are friendly and, for the most part, supportive. I've had a great experience working there, and I've been able to make a big difference in the "KP way," even as a contractor.

    Cons

Rapid growth and recent re-orgs have cause disruptions in the resources. But I like and admire our new VP, and I like where his vision is leading. Lack of documented processes, process reviews, and centralized information makes job functions difficult at times.

I have been working at Kaiser Permanente full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Kaiser is doing great things for health care in the USA. Since they are an integrated model (both the provider and the insurer), they can put the money that would have gone to shareholders back into research or new equipment. It feels good to work for a company doing good things.

    Cons

IT is an integral part of Kaiser's mission (electronic medical records and such), but being in IT is not that wonderful. They outsource an incredible amount and that makes is hard to do the work and it means there's not a lot of headroom in terms of salary. Many managers should be counseled out, but instead, they are transferred internally.

    Advice to Management

Track ALL the costs associated with outsourcing, not just the hourly rate. You might find that your best labor deal is here at home.
Build a career path for high performing individual contributors and teach managers how to work with that sort of staff.
