I have been working at Kiewit Corporation full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

If you are willing to take on responsibility all you have to do is ask and they will give you new responsibility. The company rewards those who take on more responsibilty. Company has great mindset of always striving to be the best. Great benefits and 401k plan. Decent salary.

Cons

Lots of hard work. Moving up is sometimes related to the people you know. It helps to go get drinks with the boss after work.

Advice to Management

Reward employees based on how much money you make for the company, not necessarily how much responsibility you take on. There are a lot of soft spoken, hard working, money making employees that don't get recognized as much as they should.

I worked at Kiewit Corporation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great Training schemes and Techniques

    Cons

Work 80,90 hours to get paid 40 hours. They try to doctrine you with loads of "Harassment Free" environment slides presentation and a "hot line" for it but the place is infested with it and bullying. If you denounce this attitude from some Engineer or any upper Management you are fired. Loads of inside politics, especially between PM and District Sponsors. Loads of people with egos bigger than a cathedral and dubious character.

    Advice to Management

Tame down the ego of Engineers, PM and Sponsors.

I have been working at Kiewit Corporation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Kiewit seems to have a higher salary package. They will let you take on as much as you can, However they WILL NOT support you.

    Cons

Kiewit's business plan is to hire all young men and women fresh out of school and then work them as hard as they can. They talk a good talk about work/life balance but that is just all it is...talk...they have created so many procedures to follow there doesn't seem to be the time left to do the work. They have a quality department that ONLY looks at procedures and "do I know where to find" things like the contract, design guides, org charts etc.. They do not look at the quality of the engineering that they are producing. Most of the work consists of just coping the last jobs specs. They have too many young people that are very inexperienced, doing work on their own with no guidance from older experienced people. Upper and Middle management people do not do a very good job. Some of the middle managers don't even know how to do the work that the people they are managing do. I believe that the Kiewit Division I work for is lacking in many areas and needs to be reset from the top down. If you are a member of the blessed few then you might advance in this company.

    Advice to Management

There has been too many middle and lower management positions created. The company pyramid is starting to look like a square. Run away overhead is the result. The Lenexa Office needs to be trimmed from the top down. Too many inexperienced Engineering Managers, too many Design Managers some not knowing what the folks in their discipline do. Corporate needs to look long and hard at the Lenexa office and trim the management fat.
