I have been working at Kiva for less than a year

    Pros

    - Great transparency - The org really does everything they can to make this internship beneficial for you - The Kiva community is vast and inclusive. You'll immediately feel like a part of the family. - The folks working at Kiva are incredibly well-rounded and come here with a wealth of knowledge and experience in a variety of fields. It's a great place to build your network.

    Cons

It can be difficult living off of a stipend, so it's important to consider why you're applying for this position. If your priority is to gain experience and knowledge, then this is a great opportunity! The internship is really what you make of it. Everyone is willing to make time for you and chat with you, but you have to put in the effort to ask.

    Pros

OK office environment and asthetics although not a lot of people show up for work each day. But this makes the office fairly quiet. Snacks are regularly stocked.

    Cons

Kiva operates in an EXTREMELY cavalier manner when it comes to handling sensitive data internally and also in their approach to infrastructure management and operational effectiveness. And when I say cavalier I mean to say approaching negligent. There are absolutely no current IT best practices followed. One of the decisions made by management was to prohibit implementation of any form of 2-factor authentication. This in itself is very bad practice. Standard procedure when bringing any concerns to management is to ignore the problem. Incidents of unprofessional conduct which in other companies would lead to discipline or termination are ignored due to "tenure". When individuals are communicated to directly, professionally, and privately about their bad behavior and unprofessional conduct those conversations are forwarded behind your back to management and then labeled "toxic" without regard for the conduct that led to the problems in the first place. Apparently the unprofessional conduct itself is not toxic - just the direct communication to individuals of their negligent behavior is. An example is ignoring production outages _multiple_times_ and blaming others for their lapse. Another would be to continue to rely on public facing software that has known bugs, has contributed to production outages, and continues to pose a high risk for causing production reliability problems. There is zero leadership in management. The organization continues to rely on unpaid interns for a sizable amount of day to day operations. This practice is not ethical and any company that claims to have high standards and values but relies on unpaid interns is suspect. All in all a fairly poor work environment with a complete lack of leadership on the technical side. About the only thing going for this place (if this is your thing) is that you can be mediocre and even a bad at your job and won't have to risk being fired because of that.
