I worked at Knoxville News Sentinel full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Great communication among departments. Open to creative thinking. Hard working staff -- most are great team players.

Cons

At times, felt understaffed, but what paper doesn't.

    Pros

Seasoned senior management that encouraged ongoing training and wasn't adverse to taking risks.

    Cons

Industry as a whole is having a rough time.

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

The benefits have always been great. Historically, KNS has been a great place for career opportunity and great money for the area. Many have worked there for 20 years or more.

    Cons

The economy has hit this regional newspaper hard. Cost-cutting activities include lay-offs, outsourcing some jobs (some off-shore and some to outside contractors for less money). There is a whole different atmosphere of insecurity and distrust at KNS now.

    Advice to Management

Too much focus has been on selling advertising. Management should refocus on creating a great newspaper (and web site) that people want or need to read. Do that and the circulation would go up, which would make selling the advertising less of a battle.
