I worked at Kohl's as a contractor (More than 3 years)

Pros

Depending on your area of expertise, IT at Kohl's can be great. There are a lot of solid people with which to work. Plenty of opportunity to learn, to take on new challenges, and to grow professionally. As a contract employee the money was good - and there was often overtime (at 1.5x).

Cons

Like any big company, there is a lot of warm, fuzzy group-speak to "foster team- and relationship-building." There also appears to be a huge effort to offshore as much of IT as possible (while management insists there isn't). As in other big companies, your manager may be 100% honest & genuine with you, but you have no way to know if her manager is being equally honest with her.

Whenever there's a failure of any kind, the recurring joke among employees is, "Expect great things."

Advice to Management

Sending your critical functions and their backups to offshore will bite you. Expect great things.

I have been working at Kohl's full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

-I don't know of any other retailer that gives management every other weekend off.
-Competitive salary for college grads new to the career world
    -MIT program
    -Paid salary during training
    -Paid relocation
-The company is very innovative, always looking for new technologies and resources to improve the day to day functions of the store

    Cons

-Though work life balance is a plus with Kohl's, it's still retail. Long and inconsistent hours will always be a part of the job.

    Advice to Management

The company as a whole needs to be less "conservative" with payroll.

    I worked at Kohl's full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fun building a team of part-timers, few full-timers, different backgrounds, experience etc.
Easy to beat credit goals, fun to beat customer service scores.

    Cons

After having spent 10+ years at another big box retailer, was surprised and confused at the micro-managing of the DM. For example blow out a credit acquisition goal on a Saturday but get a call Monday not congratulating on performance, but asking about why PT associate (always anonymous) called DM because they had to work recovery for an hour after store closed. Completely unprofessional.

    Advice to Management

The DM was fired after I left. I can understand the DM keeping his/her finger on the pulse of their stores, but let the SM do the job you hired them to do.
