I worked at Lawson Products full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Independent - did not have to punch a time card. Some products were exceptional. Didn't have to work in an office. Pay check was stable. Some product innovation.

Cons

Upper management changes constantly. Sales goals unachievable in a down economy. Pricing way out of line. Shipping costs passed on to customers killed many sales. Management just not in touch with reality. They act like Washington politicians.

Advice to Management

Start implementing some of what made Lawson great many years ago. Superior training of sales force made for superior customer service in the field. Currently there is little to no training whatsoever.

    Advice to Management

    If you gave Canada as much support and products as you do in United States might stand a fighting chance. Expecting customers to pay 30-40% more for similar product, waiting up to 10 days to deliver. Never worked for a sales company that expected me to purchase my own demo material. Upper managers bark orders but do nothing to aid with problems.

    I have been working at Lawson Products full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    NO micro-managing here. Almost non-existent managerial contact. Any success here will truly be your own.
    Large product range to sell.

    Cons

    Hired with a base + commission + car allowance package that soon transformed to an almost only commission package. Selling more doesn't equal making more.
    Poor marketing and promotions in Canada. Almost non-existent new product development. Minimum inventory levels in Canada mean constant back orders or exceptionally long lead times.
    Minimal National Accounts or help developing / maintaining Large accounts.
    Management is out of touch with the marketplace and provides little support or product knowledge.
    Orientation was the manager telling me to consult the help file on the computer if I had any questions.
    Focus is on the USA and Canada often seems like an afterthought.

    Advice to Management

    Stop hiring new reps and calling it growth and focus on creating sustainable sales territories and support them.
