I worked at Leslie's Swimming Pool Supplies part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company is lucky to have great business plan because they virtually have no real competition. They have a tremendous product line and offer customers very competitive prices. They succeed and growing annual inspite of the massive employee morale issues at the retail levels. The company makes massive profits, so the non-retail managers (district, regional and corp) enjoy excellent salaries and perks.

    Cons

Retail employees that take care of the customers on the front lines (and are the reason for Leslies success and has been for over 45 years), are severly underpaid for their knowledge and hard work. They are expected to know over 100+ different product lines and related details and be able to answer questions on each by customers. In reality, this ability takes over 2 years to be 80% knowledge (this is a quote from employees that have been with Leslies for over 5 years) however the retail employees are expected to know these products ASAP and start selling within days of starting.
The company pays very low wages to all store employees (sales assoc- approx.$9 per hr, asst store mgr- approx $11 per hr, and Store mgr approx $15 per hr.) , but expects them to know a trememdous amount of product and mostly complicated office procedure knowledge. You are measured and valued ONLY on how much you sell to customers (ACP-avg per customer).
They ramp up hiring annual (pool season) hiring around March/ April and start letting 75% of the seasonal hires go around late July. The rest of that years hired personel are kept to replaced seasoned personel you are NOT selling enough.
Lastly, they never give you the hours you are told you'll be getting during the short season. They cut hours daily if the weather doesn't look good are customer traffic is slow for THAT day. You'll get a call or text up to an hour before your shift telling you not to come in till a couple hours later or not at all. They watch daily payroll very tightly. Payroll is tied directly to daily sales. They only budget about 5% for daily salaries at the retail stores to keep profits high. Most American company average a ration of 30-40% salaries to sales!!!
Bottom line... the retail employees are expected to sell like sales professionals (constent agressive up-selling tacts, etc) to keep their jobs and are paid like mass-merchandising clerks that usually have no intense product knowledge are fully trained in one shift, but much better job security.

    Advice to Management

Fix the above. You never offer an employee satisfaction survey because you know you wouldn't get the truth (unless it was 100% certified anonymous). If you don't address true employee morale soon, when the economy gets corrected after the Fall 2012 election..... expect major upswing in Voluntary attrition.... A little sincere employee apprecation goes a long way.
Also, most of your store managers have no people skills...Your district managers are mostly dictators!!......
