I have been working at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Large presence in Boston with good opportunity for movement within the organization. 18 days of time off as a new hire grade 15 or below.

Good bonus opportunity based on company/unit performance

Cons

Frequent (~1-2 years) reorganizations that impact some departments more than others from a workload and headcount perspective.

Work-life balance varies between units, for the most part expect a normal 8 hour workday (offical workday is 7.5 hours)

Advice to Management

I think management knows what they're doing. They've grown too big to be concerned about impact to individual employees.

Management is taking the company in the right direction but at the expense of employee benefits.

I worked at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay is decent. Vacation time is ample. They are one of the few companies that still offer a pension plan. Workload was decent.

    Cons

The company will announce that they are going a certain direction and then a few months later, it changes. It seems that due to their size, they don't know whether they are coming or going. I was a top employee in 2010 and still had difficulty getting a promotion. I had to use 3 different claims systems to complete my job due to the fact that they purchased Ohio Casualty in 2008 and Safeco in 2009. The last I've heard is that they have yet to integrate the systems even though they promised years ago it would get done. The metrics they use to measure your performance can be somewhat unreasonable.

    Advice to Management

Quit playing favorites and appreciate the people who deserve to be appreciated.

I have been working at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-Great benefits: 401K, health, dental, TIP, education plans, etc.
    -Good pay
    -Insane job stability
-Managers encourage movement within the company
-Dedicated workforce with lots of experience in the company and with insurance
    -Loyal to the company
-Very nice people with a couple of 'grumblers'
-Work/life balance is important to the company

    Cons

    -It's insurance
    -Lot's of old processes
-Any change is very slow to happen
-With any change comes about 95% of the employees involved freaking out about it for weeks and then complaining about how they like the older way better after it's been implemented.
-Culture is exactly what you expect it to be at an insurance company: everything is a liability.
-Projects move very slowly - lot's of red tape
-Leaving the company is taboo, everyone expects you to work there for 40+ years
    -Lack of innovative projects
-There's a lack of excitement about the product

    Advice to Management

    Innovate.
