I have been working at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

The training at Liberty Mutual is great. You can come in and know nothing about insurance and after their initial training you will have a pretty good understanding of what you are talking about. Of course you will continue to learn on the job as you grow in your career. You can make a very good living at this job when your rates in your area are good but when the people in Boston start to jack your rates up the job gets much harder. Your commissions are uncapped and you can make as much money as the policies you sell will allow you to.

Cons

You are at the mercy of the management team in Boston when it comes to rates. You have no control over the rate increases you take and when you take 15-20% in a year your customers become pretty upset. You constantly take calls about rate that you take on renewal policies. There isn't much room to advance within the company unless you are willing to relocate.

I worked at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Opportunities for promotion, above-average salaries, great performance recognition programs. The Wausau location has a great cafeteria and more bathrooms than you could ever imagine. Both are nice to have when you need to escape from time to time.

    Cons

Cubicle environment, micromanagement abounds, and overly politically-correct atmosphere. There are certainly egos at play in any major corporation, and LM is no exception. Beware managers that fear their employees.

    Advice to Management

Conduct anonymous surveys of employees that ask tough questions about management, ideas, and concerns. You have many great people working for you that need flexibility (working remotely). Communicate with your employees about upcoming changes, etc. And trust them to appropriately digest the information.
