I have been working at Life Technologies full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Interesting Technology, diverse portfolio, nice people, flexible schedule when needed, competitive pay.

Cons

Once you get to a mid level position within your function you will probably never get promoted. Constant concern amoung employees that layoffs will occur. Culture is very political and hierarchical, terrible health plan.

Advice to Management

Discontinue consistant layoffs as a way to meet the numbers. Don't ignore the fact that promotions are important to people in the career growth and sense of satisfaction. Statements like "don't think up think lateral" as a way to advance your career gets "very old" after a while. The ability to have long term employees will get less and less with this philosophy.

I worked at Life Technologies full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good vacation, salary, bonus and 401k match. Highly varied products allow one to learn a lot of different life science techniques, methods, etc.

    Cons

Shortsighted management. Lots of of non-technical people in leadership positions. Medical benefits leave much to be desired.

Beware of what David Keirsey termed as the "artisan." The artisan is a specific part of the Meyers Briggs personality type. In short they can be summed up as politicos. They only like what sounds good. The management of this place is riddled with artisans. There are a lot of folks employed here who have an illusion of superiority about themselves. You are not all above average.

    Advice to Management

Stop making decisions based on the generic MBA knowledge you have and actually learn how the science works. This is not assembly line manufacturing no matter how much the leadership would like it to be. Actually invest in the culture instead of saying you have a good culture. If you have to say it as often as you do then you are convincing yourself of something that doesn't exist.

I have been working at Life Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The hours are consistent and the people are ok.

    Cons

They pay is horrible and conditions, going in and out of 30 degree and -20 degree rooms is almost unbearable.

    Advice to Management

Value your good employees better than the ones who aren't. And understand that people have other obligations in their lives, e.i, children, house, etc.
