I have been working at Life Technologies full-time (More than a year)

Pros

There is a huge growth in Biotech sector now, therefore this company is moving ahead with a very fast pace. Many career opportunities available here.

Cons

not one but many
1. Fast paced, good growth but no attention to detail. Company culture is to build things on weak bases and then keep repairing the leaks in future.
2. No good systems or software, still very outdated (Do not expect this in a rapidly growing biotech company)
3. No social culture, very productivity oriented culture. Everyone is always afraid of loosing their job if they don't prove themselves.
4. No good Cafeteria, no good break rooms
5. VERY BAD MEDICAL INSURANCE, get ready to dump your salary on Doctor's fees. Almost all expenses out of pocket.
6. Goals change all the time, Teams change all the time, at times you feel, your management doesn't know what they want to do.
7. No enough resources, employees end up working beyond capacity to get things done.
8. One very weird thing I observed here is, Contractors are separated from Full time employees. They have smaller desks, maybe 3ft X 3 ft table is their desk. They are made to sit in a different row separated from full time employees. If you are walking on the floor, looking at the row of adjacent small desks you can recognize that person sitting there is a contractor.

I have been working at Life Technologies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Industry leader, big customer base, great location for Headquarters, doesnt seem to be effected by recession, dedicated people

    Cons

lot of new initiatives but feel like they lack long term planning. Lots of uncertainties and confusion from acquisitions Some decisions on procedures, new initiatives, etc., seem to be made in without any input from the front-line staff

    Advice to Management

Involve front-line staff in the planning of projects and execution of those projects; Compensation needs to be more competitive and as well as opportunities for career development should be more. Managers need to understand and support development goals and plans of employees. stock options should be available to all employees, not just senior management.

I have been working at Life Technologies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Interesting Technology, diverse portfolio, nice people, flexible schedule when needed, competitive pay.

    Cons

Once you get to a mid level position within your function you will probably never get promoted. Constant concern amoung employees that layoffs will occur. Culture is very political and hierarchical, terrible health plan.

    Advice to Management

Discontinue consistant layoffs as a way to meet the numbers. Don't ignore the fact that promotions are important to people in the career growth and sense of satisfaction. Statements like "don't think up think lateral" as a way to advance your career gets "very old" after a while. The ability to have long term employees will get less and less with this philosophy.
