Pros

CEO is great and actually kind of inspiring (the board of directors...not so much)

Relatively large amount of independence to solve problems your own way...which can many times be a con

Second Life is fun, and you can be your Linden avatar

Cons

Process-wise, Sansar is a disastrous clusterF... If you are hired for this project, run away fast. I've been on many projects and have never seen one so badly run - yo-yo management, constantly shifting priorities, rarely a clear line of authority (instead, you get directives from multiple areas), constant employee turnover, and almost no oversight. Code reviews are almost unheard of. Engineers don't really work well together or want to help each other and the overall feeling is one of a sinking ship.

Having to fill out reviews and evaluations every 3 months is incredibly annoying

The company as a whole can't make up their mind about whether working offsite is ok or not. Hint: It is, but only if their output stays high.

The working environment is horrible and the people are mostly insular and rather toxic. I've worked at many jobs, both in the game industry and outside it, and Linden is really one of the worst I've been in.

Advice to Management

When engineers have specialties they come in to your company with, you need to try hard to make sure they work on something relating to that. It will make them happy, drastically increase the quality and quantity of their work output, and keep them from leaving for the first opportunity that DOES allow them to work on the area they enjoy focusing on. Engineers are not interchangeable cogs, or at least they shouldn't be if you want to get the best work out of them.

Pay your people better. Love is not the answer and is easily abused.

Get rid of your deadwood much faster. You have a lot of it. Even if someone is skilled, if they aren't happy, they're not going to produce well. Recognize that quickly and fix the problem or get rid of them. Letting them hang around for years is toxic to them and the rest of the company.

I have been working at Linden Lab full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Creative environment; Inclusive; Opportunity to perform a lot of different tasks and gain a lot of useful experience; for the right role, a job at Linden Lab could be perfect for you

    Cons

Overpaid consultants take funding away from FTEs; Oddly set-in-its-ways for a tech company (Second Life has been around since pre-2003 and people are reluctant to make changes or scrutinize the team's performance); only one on-site HR employee

    Advice to Management

Audit every aspect of the company that isn't already audited; don't rely on senior managers to self-report their performance.

I worked at Linden Lab full-time

    Pros

Overall, the culture is great. Lots of really awesome people who love what they do, and want to do really good work.

    Cons

Company is too focused on its new product; those who work on the mainstay feel set aside and taken for granted. HR is nearly non-existent; most team members are remote or barely in the office. Too many org changes lately have left folks feeling insecure, morale is low and sinking. I hope they can turn it around.

    Advice to Management

You have some really awesome people there; get out of their way.
