    I worked at Loblaw full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    -if you are in the union, you have a certain amount of protection as far as hours Nd wage are concerned.
    -Raise every 500 hours (goes by fast if full time).
    -Cost of living raise annually (only 10 cents)
    -10% employee discount on certain things
    -Paid 15 and 30 min breaks (guaranteed by union)
    -Starting wage usually higher than minimum wage.
    -Very flexible scheduling but restricting yourself too much will limit the number of hour you receive.
    -A lot of coworkers to meet, most of them are pretty nice.
    -Many long term employs "lifers" to learn from
    -Can transfer departments (variation)
    -Very structured training system however, many supervisors don't follow it so then it means nothing...
    -Company constantly trying to improve.
    -Company functions and initiatives
    -The learning center tries to teach and advance employees to make them promotable.
    -If you work hard and don't mind been taken advantage of, promotions come
    quicky however only if there is a position open.

    Cons

    -Wage cap. All positions have a certain amount of money you can make. Once you reach that you only get a cost of living raise.
    -Impersonal company
    -Union rules are frustrating and lazy people with higher seniority will get more hours.
    -Difficult to fire bad employees and this means workers can be very lazy or don't care.
    -Supervisors are not union and often get taken advantage of.
    -Supervisors end up taking care of other people's departments or as the evening store manager whether they like it or not.
    -Grocery side of the store makes all the money so it's best to work in that side as general merchandise side is not nearly as important.
    -Open 24 hours at Christmas
    -Customers can be very rude as they tend to be discount shoppers
    -Customers get frustrated at the poor customer service
    -High turnover
    -Supervisors tend to be poorly trained and stressed out
    -Generally speaking, there are not that many professional or passionate managers who have strong management skills. They may be hard workers but I find they don't know how to manage that well.
    -Old equipment
    -The things the learning center teaches are pretty elementary and the "teachers" often don't know that much. If you have retail experience or have been working for the company for awhile, if can be a bit of a joke depending on what department/teacher you have.
    -union only allows a certain number of full time positions so you will likely always be part time unless someone quits.
    -company wastes a lot of money on renovations and other things but then cuts hours and says it has no money for employees.
    -Union contracts take forever to settle and if you quit during that time, you will not get back pay like everyone else.
    -Only grocery department managers tend to get bonuses
    -Low hours for part time and constant hour cutting (especially at Christmas).

    Advice to Management

    Value your supervisors more. Union employees have all the rights and supervisors get treated poorly. Better communication needed. Professionalism in your role is important!

    I have been working at Loblaw full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    The people are probably the greatest part - everyone is down to earth, helpful, and it's a pretty young company overall. Management is very available and responsive, Some nice benefits.

    Cons

    Feels like salary is generally lower than average, or not adequate for the amount of time and dedication your job requires.

    Advice to Management

    More enticing or at least competitive salaries would be nice, and would help retain employees...I could be gone as soon as I find something more interesting.
