Defense industry going into downward cycle due to budget crisis

Advice to Management

We talk about doing more commercial work, but need more leadership to make the changes needed to be a player

I worked at Lockheed Martin full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It is a job. Lots of time off, two weeks at X-mas. Still has a good name but its getting bad.

    Cons

pay will not match level of responsibility or effort. Rating system is a joke its pay for favorites not performance. Hard to find one person who is happy in any department. You work 5 hours for free before you are compensated at reg pay.

    Advice to Management

Stop thinking fresh out of school kids can do the same job as a person with 20+ years in a program. FBM is hurting bad, I see the Navy pulling the contract in the next 5 years or sooner.

I worked at Lockheed Martin full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-Many of the engineers you will have the pleasure of working with are truely top notch
-You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects

    Cons

-Working on a variety of projects means you are failing to develop a core competency in your discipline which makes it difficult to get experience that can be applied elsewhere

-Lockheed Martin is a Matrix Managed Organization. This means that at any one time you will have 3+ managers. In practice, this means the manager figuring out when you should get promoted or raises will have no real insight to what work you actually do.

-The "pay for performance" is a joke. Management seems to rotate high and low ratings so everyone advances in pay at about the same rate over the long term, regardless of performance or actual contributions

    Advice to Management

-Get rid of the slackers! As someone with glowing performance reviews year after year, seeing others who clearly did not deserve getting what they got based on the work they actually did is demoralizing

-Update your management chain! The younger generation does not respond well to a faceless matrix managed machine

-Retain your top talent by actively listening to the career goals of your employees. The ones in the trenches typically know what needs to be done and how they can grow themselves to contribute more. Remember, engineers are not baseball cards that can be traded at a whim. Engineers are people with strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations.
