I have been working at Lockheed Martin full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Large stable company with locations all over the world
Interesting work vital to defense and civil applications
Opportunity to move to other business units/locations
Decent benefits
Decent initial salary at all levels (junior, mid level, senior)
Management pays attention to what's going on, but doesn't get in the way of doing your job

Cons

Working for a good manager is hit or miss - there are a few good, some bad, most mediocre. You have to learn to manage your manager. I only saw one who was really horrible, Lots of status reports, yet seem to be surprised when bad news happens.
LM has an affinity for discarding senior engineers.
Poor raises every year - zero to 2%
Benefits keep eroding away - no more pension, vacation accrual cuts, insurance rates keep getting more and more expensive

Advice to Management

Let people do what they do best. I witnessed an outstanding engineer move into management where he performed horribly. Stop the culture of making people believe they have to move into management to be sucessful

I have been working at Lockheed Martin full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good environment to work. Professionals at all levels. Benefits are competitive and generally it is a good place to be. Good long term place to be with a decent retirement. Average with the current benefits.

    Cons

Not competitive. Poorly organized. Not cost effective. Good at huge programs but not flexible enough to compete in the new environment of smaller budgets and shifting requirements.

    Advice to Management

Make the big changes that you need to compete. What got you here won't get you any further. Major changes need to happen.

I have been working at Lockheed Martin full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Started out with solid benefits, competitive pay, chance to take on exciting/challenging problems (no shortage of ownership/responsibilities for those looking to excel).

    Cons

Highly influenced by government politics with diminishing customer diversity. Though current Corporate/Space Systems executive leadership have 100+ collective years of experience at LM, they seem ill-prepared to navigate changing financial, political, and technical environment (ex. Commercial Ventures effort seems like a feeble attempt to breathe new life into the business). Simply put, LM Space Systems has fallen out of favor. What is particularly frustrating is the lack of transparency between executive leadership and workforce.

    Advice to Management

Invest $$$ in R&D to keep company afloat. Commercial Ventures IR&Ds are too little/too late. Figure out clear roles responsibilities among 3 major Space Systems Facilities and communicate that "down". For that matter - ditch the dead weight and pyramid shaped hierarchy; see NetApp for examples on culture, communication, & and structure.
