Pros

Lockheed Space Systems has a terrific work-life balance. Three weeks of vacation is standard for all employees plus holidays. The 9/80 work week is wonderful; you get every other Friday off!

Cons

There is a lot bureaucracy that can make getting anything done very difficult. The publishing of research is discouraged by the legal department. Promotions hard to earn and based entirely on the employee's age, not skills nor knowlege nor talent. There are many near-retirees in trumped-up roles that contribute little. A lot of great, young engineers start their careers at Lockeed then quickly jump ship when they see miniscule raises and no opportunites.

Advice to Management

Profit share like the rest of Silicon Valley. Too much young talent is leaving.

    Pros

Great benefits package (especially the 9/80 workweek at many locations, gives you every other Friday off). Company has a stable backlog of business in many different sectors (mostly defense), which hold up well even in a sagging economy. They have a very strong focus on ethics and doing the right thing. There is a great program for new college graduates, or if you've been working a long time, its also a great place if you just want to specialize in a certain discipline. Lots of emphasis on leadership development also, and lots of great training is encouraged in many different areas.

    Cons

Since most work is on Government contracts, the work can be highly structured, and there are many procedures to follow.

    Advice to Management

I think they're on the right course - keep doing what they are doing.

    Pros

Solid company, management is committed to their employees

    Cons

The corporate level management seems a bit weak but the local company level management quite strong.

    Advice to Management

Give more responsibility to the management at the local company level. Too many of the "pronouncements from on high" are not suitable for all of the companies.
