I worked at Lockheed Martin full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The opportunities to work on different projects were terrific. The work-life balance was great. One of the best perks was the 9/80 schedule, which allowed people to work 9 hours, Mon-Thu and 8 hours on Friday on one week, then 9 hours Mon-Thu and no work on Friday in the following week.

    Cons

Some major proposals were lost and, as a result, the work dried up. Oddly, the company decided that rather than lay off those in affected programs, the remaining ongoing and profitable programs would transition to other facilities around the country, and the facility would be closed and put up for sale. The morale was very poor in the years leading up to the closure, and the environment became pretty toxic.

    Advice to Management

The closure was very unfortunate and deeply affected a lot of families in Minnesota. It is a shame that the management didn't have the capability and insight to find a better solution. It felt a lot like a betrayal, especially with the generous compensation packages that were taken by those at the director level and above in the voluntary layoff packages that were given to executives prior to the closure. This will be a shameful scar that the leadership of Lockheed Martin will have to bear forever.
