    Pros

Ethical culture, emphasis on work-life balance, opportunity to engage in a variety of learning experiences. I'm most proud of the community orientation -- the emphasis on volunteerism, the money the company invests in basic research with a variety of universites, and the real contributions toward K-12 science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

    Cons

The company is shrinking now, partly due to externalities and partly due to a lack of substantive actions on long-term strategic sustainability issues. It is a generally unpleasant work environment. I hope that this will improve as the economy improves, but right now I see nothing more than lip service toward strategic issues: more agile product development, workforce development, or addressing competitors and new entrants to the market. Company appears to be following the path of "How the Mighty Fall" as Jim Collins describes. Diversity initiatives fall flat. Serious pay equity issues abound. HR is a broken organization - it does not act as a strategic partner to the business. Instead, the HR organization makes arbitrary nonsensical decisions, is a barrier to hiring appropriately to the business needs, and retaining the right people.

    Advice to Management

Investor-facing top management does a good job of communicating externally to both the investors and the top ranks of our government customers. The customer-facing segment of the company generally does a good job of delivering complex products and services to the customer, as well. The company really needs to address its soggy midsection. There are too many silos, too much middle management, too many meetings where issues are discussed and never resolved. Really need to rebuild HR; I was hoping when the HR VP was replaced with an external candidate earlier this year, that there would be visible changes, but so far the bad practices have just intensified. Need to address workforce development, affordability/agile development, with more concrete actions and less lip service.

    Pros

Very large company with many internal opportunities between its 5 lines of business. Good stability if you can find the right program to work on.

    Cons

Primary focus in my area is on integration rather than development.
Tons of bureaucracy to get anything done.
Such a large company that many employees get lost in the shuffle. Fine if you don't have any ambitions and just want a weekly paycheck.

    Advice to Management

Go out and actually poll the workers for problem areas that could be improved upon because middle management is definitely not getting the word out to you. Then, actually execute to improve your company. It surprises the hell out of me that anything gets done that actually works.
