I have been working at Los Alamos National Laboratory full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

LANL is a government facility so it offers a great learning landscape. It is located in a beautiful area. It is possible to eliminate commuting from your life here. Los Alamos is a small town with a very forward way of thinking. It offers stable employment for professionals.

Cons

Because it's government work, it is orchestrated by several different agencies so is very frustrating. From a Procurement point of view, the work is very cumbersome and overly detailed. Communication is difficult because the facility encompasses 22 square miles.

Advice to Management

Bechtel needs to stop trying to think of this facility as a "Project". It isn't one. Management needs to stop doing risk avoidance and start doing risk assessment.

I have been working at Los Alamos National Laboratory full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great place to work if you like freedom (to choose what to work on), nice town if you like the outdoors

    Cons

Government rules and bureaucracy, very small town. Computer Science is not the focus, and is very little understood by upper management. You have to be able to deal with *a lot* of meetings.

    Pros

    Low stress. 980's. Low expectations.

    Cons

Colleagues who don't work hard or care that much. Low salaries. Too much security. Treats employees poorly.

    Advice to Management

    Put people first.
