I worked at LyondellBasell North America full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Multiple large sites in the Houston area
Good positions in the chemical markets
Flexible Refinery that can run a wide range of crude slates
Opportunities for young engineers to get a lot of experience
The company will be able to coast on the legacy of Lyondell's Reliability Culture for another few years before the losses in experienced engineers are truly felt.

Cons

The Pre-Bankruptcy Lyondell culture was focused on Reliability via excellent technical personnel

The Lyondellbasell culture is all about cost control; employees cost and spend money so they must be controlled

It used to be a company philosophy to have excellent 20+ year Engineers to provide technical continuity and mentor the next generation but that has been effectively eliminated since the Basell merger.

After about 10 years there is little to no hope for promotion on the technical track and with the stated goal of paying 50% of market reference for compensation no real reason to stay.

Promotion onto the management track is largely by the buddy system emphasizing buddies from outside the current company talent pool.

The drain of technical talent over the last 2 years has left few mentors and even those that are left have very little time to actually teach.

Management philosophy and the major losses of technical talent has made for a non-existent work-life balance for the remaining technical personnel. An upper manager bragged that they have not been on vacation with their family in 20 years and a different senior leader stated that they had been at work while a spouse went through cancer treatments showing. That is attitude of upper management towards work-life balance and they expect that from their employees.

Advice to Management

A 2 year engineer is not a 20 year engineer even if they both are called engineers. People are not necessary evils that cost money but the core of what keeps those executive bonuses flowing.

I have been working at LyondellBasell North America full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Salary and compensation are competitive, but not as good as prior years.

    Cons

A very negative atmosphere to work in and be a part of. Lack of integrity and credibility in upper management, with only a short term view of generating shareholder value that lacks sustainability over the long term.

    Advice to Management

Provide a better balance to community, employees and shareholders as part of your core mission. Treat employees more as assets - rather than costs. Become a better citizen in your regional/local communities.

I have been working at LyondellBasell North America full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company is in a pretty building

    Cons

I have never worked in a more hostile work environment! The directors are there by political positioning. They treat their subordinates as unprofessionals and lead by intimidation. Everyone in my group is scared "spitless" and therefore there is much backbiting. Everyone (and I mean everyone) within the group is looking for other jobs. There is no pull-together attitude among the group. .

    Advice to Management

When there is excessive turnover within a department, it should tell "someone" that the person in charge is not qualified for their position. My director is an intimidating bully and gets away with it. My advice is: Call the people who have left in the last 3-6 months and ask them this question. They will give you honest answers without fear of the ever-present retribution so exists within this company. I do not approve of the current CEO because he lets this abuse continue. Millions are being spent on outsourcing when the work could more accurately be done in-house. The problem is the directors are uneducated enough in their fields and want to micromanage everything. They have a thing for control and are out of their league.
