I have been working at Lytro full-time (More than a year)

Pros

- work on technology that will absolutely change the camera industry someday
- own your own machine (almost)
- plenty of smart coworkers
- free lunch

Cons

- overall corporate direction unclear
- lack of widespread understanding
- office environment is just one giant room
- surprisingly lacking in "dynamic, startup" feel

Advice to Management

- figure out what you're doing and tell your employees
- think about fixing problems instead of making them worse
- don't second guess your employees all the time

I worked at Lytro full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    The people are great.
    The technology is amazing.
The work environment is wonderful (free lunches, on-site showers, great location, flexible hours).

    Cons

Lack of experience with software development process is frustrating.
Management has a poor attitude towards people management (no reviews, no bonuses, no frequent 1:1s, no "voice of the workforce").
Executive management lacks experience in product development to execute quickly.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your employees! Buy them the best equipment and make sure you financially incent them beyond options. Stop telling employees they're lucky to be working at Lytro. You are lucky to have them!

Also, hire executives with experience building hardware and shipping software. Lack of process, planning, and overall execution is extremely frustrating to your individual contributors.

    I worked at Lytro full-time

    Pros

The majority of engineers are nice and collaborative.

    Cons

Lytro is for people good at politics rather than engineering.
The engineering managers have little technical knowledge in relevant area and cannot have a discussion based on math and science. They emotionally push their inconsistent and nonsensical opinions on engineers. They don't hesitate to tell a lie and harass engineers daily. The fundamental product development is getting stagnant over the last year.

    Advice to Management

Better to stop wasting hundreds of hours having discussion based on wrong information and assumption. Ask engineers. Lying is harmful and it is easily revealed in engineering world. How can we trust and work with people intentionally circulating wrong information?
