I worked at MIT full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

I worked in MIT Sloan and was given a nearly limitless budget for experimentation. The difference between this and typical universities purses was highly significant.

Cons

MIT bureaucracy is similar to government (many levels of redundancy) - making it sometimes difficult to do things outside of the box (especially when they deal with making or spending money).

Advice to Management

"Management" in this case is supervisor dependent. For me, it was excellent.

I worked at MIT full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Wonderful work-life balance. I was allowed to work from home as needed, the vacation schedule is very generous. Not much overtime expected.

A lot of freedom in getting the job done - a great place for independently-minded workers.

MIT is a fun place! The staff gets to participate in many of the events and extra-curricular activities for students such as the sailing club, MIT fitness center, etc.

    Food trucks. Enough said.

    Cons

In most academic support roles there is no clear career path. This makes it tricky to progress in a career if you're in administration.

  2. "A fast-paced, high demanding academic institution renowned for its cutting-edge research."

I have been working at MIT full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The resources are abundant, internal opportunities for postdocs are well established, and the prestige of working at MIT.

    Cons

Work life balance is discouraged. As is true across academics, your work environment is highly dependent on your PI and their day-to-day mood.

    Advice to Management

No clear hierarchy exists within academics. PIs should be encouraged to attend workshops and seminars on proper management styles.
