No opinion of CEO

I have been working at MIT as a contractor (Less than a year)

Pros

They take really good care of their employees. The benefits are great and they support staff well with professional development seminars, large gatherings, and the work-life balance center.

Cons

Things are a little decentralized so it's hard to get things done sometimes. Students are also all very stressed and something that tension seeps into the staff atmosphere. Because things are so decentralized, I get the sense that the culture of individual offices varies drastically and thus impacts one's experience.

Advice to Management

Continue to try and coordinate university-wide staff communication.

I have been working at MIT full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Access to the best academics in the world. Friendships that will last a life time.

    Cons

Insane culture of hard work. Sink or swim. Might actually a Pro to work with others who are serious about their craft. Work place depends on your advisor. Do research on which PI will be best for you.

    Advice to Management

Smartest people in the world, sometimes need management training too.

I worked at MIT full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

MIT offers exceptional benefits, including amazing tuition reimbursement opportunities and full-time health benefits for half-time work. In addition, you have the chance to work with some outstanding people and, depending on the role, deal with some interesting issues.

    Cons

Dysfunction is sweeping and systemic. Politics are rife at any university, but the intensity of the politics depends on who's leading the school at any given time. Under present leadership at the business school, politics are especially frenzied. Bureaucracy is such that the unfit are rarely fired and often promoted to leadership positions. The politically skilled rise swiftly; some are talented at other things, and some are not, but political skill trumps everything.
