I have been working at MITRE full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Great work life balance, collegial environment, ability to pick own projects, 40 hr/wk expectation, great colleagues who are friendly and happy to help pass on their knowledge - the continuous learning opportunities are to notch, good pay.

Cons

Advancement along the technical track is extremely difficult. It's a great place to get started in your career or for those who are established and want somewhere interesting and stable to work a reasonable amount of hours. Not a great place for a mid career person who is ambitious.

Advice to Management

Get rid of this old fashioned "raise" mentality, if a relatively new employee is better than someone who has been at their "salary level" for years, they should be paid more and have more opportunities for advancement. Seniority seems to override merit.

I worked at MITRE full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Work life balance, benefits were comparable to other companies, cafeteria

    Cons

Bloated upper layer of management, lots of yes men (and I do mean men, this place does't like to hire women), diversity a four letter word here, individuals who can throw around buzz words and make good power points are superstars here, anyone with a hard science/engineering degree and technical talent treated like disposable staff.

    Advice to Management

Look at what successful companies are doing and try to mimic. Otherwise you will just die of old age.

I worked at MITRE full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Retirement benefits are excellent! Vacation time is pretty good too, but includes sick days. Good for people who never get sick. Flexibility to occasionally work from home (snow storm, sick child, etc.).

    Cons

No career growth on the Corporate side at all! I worked in the same position for 5 and a half years and never received a promotion or any kind of change in assignment despite big promises at the interview. It was not for lack of trying! Big part of the reason why there is no growth is that people stick around forever, which is a testament to the good benefits of the company. There are many people at MITRE who have worked there 20, 30, 40 or even 50 years. Some people just never want to retire, which means that very few positions open up. It also means that adopting new ways of doing things is painfully slow, because "It has always been done this way." Another con is the minimal annual raises, which average around 2% per year.

    Advice to Management

Be more open to change and doing things in a more efficient way even if it means having to change an old way of doing something. Come up with programs for Junior employees to advance their career. You will lose good talent if MITRE does not offer room for growth for young people.
