Pros

If you're willing to adapt, learn, and be proactive, there's no limit to how far you can go at MITRE. The benefits are great, although salaries are maybe a little lower than industry average. If you're good at what you do, MITRE will provide you with a stable job until you retire. And if you don't like what you're doing, there are plenty of opportunities to make lateral moves within the company.

Cons

With all the stability, things can feel stagnant sometimes. Some employees (but far from all of them) have a "government job" mindset: they clock their hours and go home, and work at an average pace while they're there. Others are passionate, dedicated and hardworking. It depends on what department you end up in.

Advice to Management

Shake things up a little. Get the corporate culture more used to things like working form home, truly flexible hours, etc. Recruit some fresh and younger people, and see where that takes you.

    Pros

Strong sense of purpose permeates the culture. Employees have open and frank conversations about helping the US gov't with its challenges.

    Cons

If you're outside of the Bedford Mass or McLean area, you won't benefit as greatly from the perks.

"MITRE tries hard to do the right thing; execution is often lacking as are clear and consistent goals."

I have been working at MITRE full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

MITRE has some very bright people and has well established position in the public sector. Some of the work is truly fascinating; one has opportunities to parlay technical skills & interests into research programs. Some of the work programs truly make a difference in the world.

    Cons

MITRE values work-life balance. However, as MITRE is really more aptly described as a collection of many projects rather than a consistent corporate culture, you may be expected to work long hours, weekends, and holidays depending on the project to which you are assigned.

In addition, some of the sponsor set just plain do not like contractors, and show little compunction about publicly berating you.

In addition, in recent years many former military have been hired into the company and subsequently promoted too quickly into management and without having been socialized. While some of these people are excellent, many are not. Some dislike civilians and make little attempt to hide their contempt.

    Advice to Management

Decide what kind of company you want to be, then articulate a clear vision. Establish goals and objectives consistent with that vision. Make the culture consistent with your vision, and then hire and socialize accordingly.
