Pros

MITRE provides an optimal work environment if you're looking for generous benefits and a great work-life balance. The people are very respectful and highly intelligent. Due to its large programs of work and various customers, one could carve out their own path and pursue professional goals fairly easily.

Cons

Due to the great work environment it provides, there is very little turnover. This is wonderful for some, but it also results in a pace could be a bit too calm and stagnant for others.

Advice to Management

There is a common message communicated that MITRE that networking will get you further than superior work. I wouldn't think that this commonly held belief is in the best interest of MITRE on the whole.

    Pros

Work-Life Balance is taken seriously and supported across the organization. People are encouraged to pursue their personal and professional goals almost equally. Paid time off is granted for some civic duties such as being a museum docent or election worker. Working from home and flexible scheduling make child care challenges easy to manage.

    Cons

Low staff and management turnover limits promotion and growth opportunities. The company is growing strongly but in many diverse areas. If you're employed in a fairly stable work area it's difficult to find promotions in your area. This forces others to either develop new skills in unrelated areas to pursue advancement or stay put and hope for the best. Since many of the areas of MITRE are mutually exclusive, it can be hard to transfer into growth areas. For example, an expert in artifiicial intelligence would have difficulty becoming a network engineer.

    Advice to Management

Encourage managers to give more frequent financial rewards for performance throughout the year to offset the slower career advancement due to low staff turnover.

    Pros

Ability to work in the public interest on critical national security issues with full support of management to "do the right thing." At MITRE the only interest is the public interest.

    Cons

As a not for profit organization, while your are paid a competitive salary, there are no stock options or bonuses as can be seen in some other high tech companies (eg. Google...)

    Advice to Management

More town hall style interactions with employees, enabling management to discuss it vision and direction, coupled with Q&A with the staff.
