I worked at Macy's part-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Great group of co-workers; company discount, appreciable benefits of you're fortunate enough to have worked for the compamy before their restructuring or somehow finagle a full-time current position

Cons

Like any organization, favoritism abounds. Some who've worked there as little as 6 months get on the fast track to promotion (and actually have positions created just for them) and others (such as yours truly) work for the company for over 5 years with great yearly reviews and regular salary increases but no advancement even when requests are made by the individual for more responsibility and more challenge.

Advice to Management

Get with the program and acknowledge those who take the time to learn their jobs. The turnover rate is rapid and costly. Guard against petty dictators; they create negativity. And put peopel in chargw who actually know something!

    Pros

Pay was good for those of us in fine jewelry. There was a small commission as well so that kept me working there for a while. Their employee incentives, aside from the commission, were decent. Management wasn't awful which is great but I was in OK and folks are just nice and familiar overall.

    Cons

The employee turnover rate was pretty frequent when I was there and it was a nuisance constantly working with new folks...which means always training new folks. Also, those retail hours can be a beast, especially if you're a parent or student because it's not always easy getting a schedule change without being punished for it later with fewer assigned hours. Don't expect too much in the way of promotions unless you're here for many years.

    Advice to Management

Management was personable, and recognized good work on the sales floors. That good work didn't always translate into promotions, though, occasionally, led to raises. Promotions would help keep good sales associates on the floor!

    Pros

There is a huge amount of flexibility working on the flex team. You choose all of your own hours, and once you're there you get some attendance credits that you can use for once you're sick or can't make it to a shift. Flex team is awesome- you can work as many hours as you want, in any department that you want, and you get to meet a lot of different managers and people that way.

    Cons

At Macy's in particular, here are the cons: lack of sufficient training, the pressures of making sales goals makes employees hostile towards each other. That's pretty much it, though. Retail always has its negatives, but Macy's is in a lot of ways a better place to work than other places.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of individual sales goals -- instead, emphasize department sales goals.
