I have been working at Macy's part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexibility; working different shifts, you can pick up shifts online [or on the registers/computers at work] or advertise shifts you do not want to other people to pick up all without having to ask a manager or otherwise.

    Cons

Not paid enough for the expected work. We have sales goals even in non-commissioned areas. Therefore equaling in no teamwork between associates who have to take care of fixing up areas or taking care of fitting rooms. Although that is when you have more than one person in an area. Lately, you have no time to think because you will be running around trying to take care of customers, clean your never ending fitting rooms, pick up the clearance racks, fold clothes, use the register, open accounts, etc.. A lot of the time you are too busy you have to choose to do one or the other and most people choose sales so the area because a disaster zone or you choose your area and next week have to wait for your manager to go over your scorecard to tell you are not doing anything right.

Scorecards only show you how you are doing in sales. Nothing else will get acknowledged. You will feel like you are in school every week you go over your scorecard and how you can do better.

Managers are dishonest, not helpful, negative, disrespectful, use favoritism, talk about other associates behind backs, unapproachable, point fingers, do not check up on areas, stay in their office and talk all day, do not listen to others opinions and therefore do not do their jobs.

There is rare chance you can have a career opportunity here. No one lets you know when there are opportunities and even then your scorecard will keep you from ever advancing.

    Advice to Management

    Treat associates with respect.

    I worked at Macy's full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The coworkers and management were amazing. Everyone is down to earth, even the store manager, giving you plenty of opportunities to voice your opinion on how Macy's can make you a happier employee. The atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly. You feel like a part of something bigger than yourself. Macy's provided many opportunities to volunteer in the community and participate in store events which created a family like environment. Worked there for 5 years because I loved my job.

    Cons

I received only a dollar raise in those 5 years. It's a good idea to ask for a high pay when you're first hired. Otherwise, you're stuck at that rate no matter how good of a job you do.

    Advice to Management

Continue being positive with the employees, it rubs off. I loved my management team, but try to give larger raises or at least better wages that are more comparable to rival stores i.e. Nordstrom, Dillard's, Neiman's who all pay a few dollars more per hour doing the same job.
