Pros

Being a teacher meant an awful lot of independence from oversight which was nice. The benefits were very good, the salary was fairly good as well considering it was right out of college. The area was fairly cheap to live in. The superintendent was very hands on, and got to know all of the teachers, but this is a very small school district.

Cons

When the principal got involved things went downhill fast. In addition, like many (all?) teaching jobs, the students can be apathetic at best, destructive at worst. There were good students to balance it out, but this was a rural area. Many students were convinced that they were going to continue doing what "pappy" did, and farm or log trees (and I am not making a value judgment on the chosen vocation, simply describing a con to a teacher).

Advice to Management

The school board office management seems to be doing fine. They are involved in the schools on a daily basis and suitably hands on or off as needed. The line management in the schools needs to pay more attention to what their teachers are doing. There are teachers who are turning kids loose for all three lunchs, letting kids roam the halls, and not actually doing any teaching during class time and they are either unaware or ignoring it.

I worked at Madison County Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Laid back, loved the work and the people i worked with. Great learning experience, helped me build the foundation of my knowledge. Hard work was always noticed. always has interns and gives them a chance to learn and get a feel for a work environment.

    Cons

Very low pay. Some interns made more than full time staff. Administration was way over paid and did not believe in the need for a technology team. Administration always going back on policies requiring constant change. Very few opportunities for advancement. constant high ticket volume. slow turn around time due to small staff(5 full time to cover 23 buildings across 2 cities). High turn over rate

    Advice to Management

If you would pay your employees a competitive wage you wouldn't lose your whole team year after year.
