Pros

Making Waves supports kids in a community who really need help.

Cons

AWFUL management. The folks in charge are passionate about what they do, but the intense micro-management does a disservice to the organization. Furthermore, the main person in charge is not an educator and makes unilateral decisions based on her intuition. Unfortunately, her intuition is not sufficient.

Advice to Management

Hire a human resources specialist and give that person the autonomy needed to get authentic feedback from employees.

    Pros

Making Waves Academy is one of the up and coming Charter Management Organizations in the Bay Area. MWA students and community has amazing potential, as well as incredible resources available.

    Cons

This organization has been through several transitions and changes in leadership, and continues to adapt each year. This requires significant dedication, patience, and hard work on behalf of all employees.

    Pros

There is a lot of financial support and a lot of good intentions for serving a specific population -- black and brown students in an economically disadvantaged area.

    Cons

Every decision from the top seemed political, not pedagogical. An obsession with "data-driven instruction" was so poorly handled that students were never given a legitimate assessment. However they were judged (as were the teachers) on how they scored on assessments that, due to technical glitches, had not accurately recorded the student responses.

    Advice to Management

Don't put saving the world before teaching the children how to read, write, and think. Stop treating students like test cases.
