I have been working at March of Dimes full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Admirable mission with a rich history

Cons

Wasteful. Do not use funds to build and retain hard-working, achievement driven employees, which at the end of the day are the foundation of any successful nonprofit or business. By underappreciating, under-paying and severely overworking its staff, the organization successfully drives away any talent that comes its way. Turnover is a huge problem and wastes funds that could otherwise go back to its mission. It's very unfortunate.

Advice to Management

Management needs to treat this non-profit business just like any other business. Employees should not be rewarded for his/her time with the organization overall but for his/her qualitative and quantitative accomplishments and ability to manage responsibilities and relationships with volunteers and staff.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

    - laid back dress code
    - flexible, you can come in whenever you feel like it (as demonstrated by "management"
    - meet great people through committees

    Cons

    - empty promise after empty promise when it comes to raises
    - management... wait, there is no management
    - horrible work/personal life balance. This job demands a lot of your weekends and evenings without comp time, let alone compensation. It's not worth it for the "just above minimum wage" you'll make.
    - the most unprofessional place I've ever worked

    Advice to Management

Figure out what direction you want the foundation to go. Then, learn how to communicate that. After that, put some management in place and execute the plan.

"March of Dimes is in trouble"

    Pros

    A good mission
opportunity to work with families affected by prematurity and birth defects
    Co-workers were great

    Cons

Organization seems to be in trouble. Lost focus! Employees are disrepected/ burned out. Rampant turnover that is justified by leadership as entry level turnover. There are few opportunities to advance, absolutely NO listening or respect from employees OR the volunteers in the community. I question the way money is wasted, not because MOD is a non-profit, but because they simply waste money!! When revenues are down (as they are NATIONWIDE) the leadership here is firing and intimidating fundraising staff. The truth is there have been few if any new relationships to come on board i(nationally, regionally) in a few years. The MOD has lost some great top leaders and has kept some dead wood!!

    Advice to Management

When you ask for feedback, LISTEN! Respect your employees as you claim to respect your volunteers. Old time managers are imtimidated by ANY new ideas. This organizations needs Dr. Phil to ask "...and how's that working for you?" In 25 years of revenue development I never witnessed such out dated philosophies. Stop blaming the BOT for decisions being made, I think they would croak if they went into the field and witnessed the nonsense!!
