I worked at Marchex full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Small company so lots of opportunities to take on projects and grow in your career. Don't expect and increase in pay even if you get an increase in title.

Cons

Very low pay, below industry average. Promotion is based on the old boy's club buddy system. Lots of underqualified people in senior roles.

Advice to Management

Pay your employees what they are worth.

    Pros

*They will hire pretty much anyone with a college degree and has used
    Excel more than 3 times.
*They give you the time off you want when you want it as long as you
    give them adequate notice.
*Most people remain professional on a superficial level and are nice
    to your face.
*Low level management is accessible and fairly competent.
*The hiring and training process was smooth.
*Reception and facilities employees are friendly and proficient at their job.
*If you are the stereotypical "IT type" you will find that the office
    culture is paradise.
*There is a free, usually well-stocked snack bar and limitless soda.
    *The office is normally clean.

    Cons

*You start at $10/hour, no bus pass, no benefits, overtime is not guaranteed.
*There is absolutely no possibility for internal growth. They will
tell you there is and that is a lie. *During the year that I would
here two people were promoted from entry level, one left within the
year, the other continues to receive 30K per year with benefits and a
free bus pass. Upper level management is hired externally.
*There is no follow up. If you attempt to meet with HR or a supervisor
about the possibility of changing departments within the company or
advancement they will give you the run-around or blow smoke up your
ass. Anything to appease you and swiftly get you out of their office.
*There is a lot of internal unrest. Many lower level employees find
this job unsatisfying after the initial glow of being hired in a tough
economy wears off. This creates a very bitter and negative atmosphere
in the office that remained unaddressed (or possibly unnoticed?) by
management/HR during the time that I was employed.
*The turn over rate is VERY high. After one year, only one of the
people I was initially hired with was still with the company and that
person was actively applying to retail sales jobs when I left.

    Advice to Management

Put genuine effort into making your entry level employees feel valued, not with cheesy
motivational speeches or tickets to see a movie, but by giving them a
reason to stay loyal to your organization. There is a reason the vast majority of employees
leave, even once they are hired on full-time.

    Pros

    Learning is encouraged.
If things come up and you can't make a deadline for a sane reason, no one's going to bust your ass over it.
    Good work life balance.
Everyone's got a pretty good attitude.

    Cons

Meh, I like it well enough.

    Advice to Management

The business end of things seems to be managed a little bit weird, but I certainly don't have all the information there, as a software engineer.
