I worked at Marin General Hospital full-time

Pros

Great vacation and PTO time. Pay is competitive. Clinical staff is awesome and many doctors are shared with UCSF. Staff may be unhappy, but patients still come first. Van available to take you from parking to campus. Culture is high on work life balance in most departments.

Cons

Parking is a nightmare and not in campus, six months worth of pension funding are still under dispute and not funded by the district to the employees. New third party healthcare administrator for employee health insurance tends to deny claims more often now, and you have to keep appealing. Finally, I decided to leave, what is the point of a low deductible and out-of-pocket when you have all this hassle? Not a whole lot of training on how to improve ourselves and work, except for training on new software. Very little advancement for non-clinical staff. Educational reimbursement offered in benefits brochure, but neither HR or management know anything about it, or they refer you to each other when you ask about it.

I worked at Marin General Hospital as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Some colleagues were very nice and helpful, others not so much. Flexible hours in some positions. Nice location in Greenbrae.

    Cons

Administration management is very unorganized (behavioral health dept). Many don't have a firm grasp of their jobs let alone those who work under or with them. They are in long meetings nearly everyday.

Didn't get a good vibe from day one and unfortunately it never improved. People seemed stressed, suspect it's from poor management. Training is non existent. You get passed around to already busy people who vaguely know parts of your job, each one refuting what the previous person said. Lacks consistency all across the board. You really have to fly by the seat of your pants here, high employee turnover, frequently hiring for the same positions.

Lastly, facilities are not clean, nothing wrong with well maintained older buildings but the cramped work space (two people to a pod), had food/drink stuck on the keyboards and monitors; chairs and floors were dirty, restrooms just as bad. Dept elevator is out of order long term so emergency stairwell is used by patients and staff alike when moving between floors -disabled people would have to enter/exit on a different wing and walk down long hallways connecting the wings.

It was very inefficient and was left wondering how this confusing atmosphere affects patient care and confidence.

In summary, if you thrive in chaos, you will find your niche here. If you require solid organization, you will wilt. If you're somewhere in between and up for a challenge, try to land a seasoned and knowledgeable supervisor, you will have a lively experience.

    Advice to Management

Needs a major overhaul. With the huge influx of money this organization receives, this hospital should be run far better for the community it serves and the employees who make it happen.

Desperately needs organization and clarification from the top down -be accountable. Clarify and edit supervisor responsibilities and goals, improve the IT and intranet experience (more about that, below) implement proper training procedures so each person knows what to produce and expect, update the IT system and programs -it was terribly out of date. Large files were poorly organized in multiple locations, very difficult to navigate. Multiple printers didn't work so had to find ones in different office locations on different floors, crazy!
