Pros

Great access to data/industry expertise and resources. Marsh has a capability that is beyond compare in these areas.

Cons

Marsh has developed minimum standards for servicing placements. Some of these requirements are excellent and obviously needed. However, as far as servicing to the individual client, it often gets in the way of what might be in the best interest of the client by burdening the team with administrative work which hinders servicing needs.

Advice to Management

Marsh's practice of promoting from within is commendable. However, great insurance brokers do not make great managers. Often they are placed within the position without being prepared for the human relation requirements that are needed for the position. I would like to see training provided to these managers so they are prepared with the tools for the job. Invest in the human capital and they will take care of you.

I have been working at Marsh as a contractor

    Pros

Great location right in the heart of downtown Toronto in a very new building easy to get to by transit and with connection to the PATH.

Pay is great for a Tier 2 Helpdesk position.

    Cons

Very little opportunity for advancement or even lateral movement within the company unless you're already a pretty senior figure. Was told that a move from IT into the business side was normal and lots of people do, but then a hiring freeze meant I couldn't switch from contract to full time and so my employment will soon end. No benefits as a contractor (including no sick days, no vacation days, no drug/dental/health coverage), but pay doesn't really make up for the lack of all those.

    Advice to Management

Communicate better with your staff. There's a total disconnect between senior management, middle management, and the actual "regular" staff that results in the staff feeling like we're not part of a larger whole.
