I have been working at Marshfield Clinic full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Excellent selection of technologies in the infrastructure space. A willingness now to look at accountability when it come to chargeback, budgeting and the cost of I.T. investments and how it may affect the bottom line.

Cons

Unable to commit to complete essentials required to support and operationalize the technologies that are in use. Exceedingly "mom and pop" arrangement with respect to capital budgeting and chargeback. Very little communication on architectural direction and the desired implementation.

Advice to Management

Commit your resources so you can complete your priorities before moving on to a new project ( finish what you start ). Embrace your pro's, hire college graduates to run your intel infrastructure with the knowledge they will most likely leave within 18 months due to lack of accountability in promoting based on success.

I worked at Marshfield Clinic full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    None to really report here.

    Cons

Isolated location that was not very friendly

    Advice to Management

Ideas from lower management staff could add value to the organization, if you allow such ideas to be offered

  2. "The work is rewarding, the hours and salary are fair. Opportunities for programmer advancement does not exist."

Current Employee - Programmer Analyst in Marshfield, WI

    Pros

Rewarding work to improve patient care, it is the mission of the organization and they mean it. Overall get to work with friendly and helpful people. Stable job with low rate of turnover. Working remotely has recently became more available.

    Cons

Location, to really advance you have to be in Marshfield which is not a place many spouses want to live. Confused direction, to many upper level managers whose responsibilities are clear, which can also put programmers in the middle. Salary structures we changed from several tiers to only a couple which has created unfair salary disparities.

    Advice to Management

Continue to move towards being more open about the direction of the IS department. Continue to quickly fix and correct direction when it appears a mistake was made. Be much clearer with job responsibities of all levels, there are several members within upper management that do not have a clear role. Clear up where each person actually reports.
