I have been working at Massachusetts General Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

concentration of talented ambitious people, nice new building in my case, a step up in any research career, downtown location is close to everything, vibrant international community

Cons

takes 2 months for even 2-mo summer students to get paperword arranged, even if not in contact with patients. Administration processes and maintanance organisation can be surprisingly inefficient and slow for such a highly praised, Harvard affiliated institute. Have had a broken printer stand around for 2 months now. Housing is expensive nearby, bike facilities only slowly being build up, and parking impossible.

Advice to Management

Please create a simple and fast newcomers welcome with (temp-) building access and login in the first 2 days. Researchers that never come close to patients shouldn't automatically need all the regulation that hospital workers do for vaccinations and encryption. There should be a 'fixer' on each research floor that can get things like locker distribution, office supplies and fixes, internet cables, disoriented new colleagues, floorjobs sorted out right away. Now that is expected of an overworked grant manager who has better things to do and thus does a terrible job.

I have been working at Massachusetts General Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great research facilities. Patients are generally treated well. Good location to work in terms of proximity to public transportation.

    Cons

Terrible atmosphere to work in. Long hours with unpaid overtime. Boss would yell, make insulting remarks, and misplace blame. HR would not return phone calls, answer phone, or e-mail. I couldn't take it anymore and found a better job. Best decision ever!

    Advice to Management

Don't treat your coordinators like they are expendable.

Some senior administration gets away with very little work and high pay.

    Advice to Management

Keep the bonuses and incentives coming so employees work harder.
