I have been working at Massage Envy full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

My schedule is set and does not change.

Cons

Very low pay per 'service' and no pay while at work during 'non-service' time.

Advice to Management

Promote from within, Raise the pay to industry standards, build a team with competent and capable people, be honest and responsive, add natural light to all rooms...create a wellness center. The building and people are continually sick.

I have been working at Massage Envy part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great clients and coworkers. Flexible scheduling.

    Cons

Inadequate pay. You are paid per service hour and not hourly. The average pay at our location is $15-$17 per service hour. If you are not booked, you are not getting paid. So beware if you interview with this company and they tell you that the pay is $15 an hour. It's not. No benefits, many holidays must be worked, no paid time off. They say that they don't want employees to work when they are sick yet the message is clear that you will be penalized if you call in sick. They pit front desk employees against massage therapists quite frequently. Management and owners have a distinct lack of knowledge when it comes to massage and massage contraindications. A seemingly utter lack and concern for basic cleaning and OSHA protocols. They treat staff as disposable and massage therapists as interchangeable commodities. There is a assembly line mentality in regard to scheduling clients and how much time is given between clients.

    Advice to Management

If you are going to advertise a massage therapy position as paid per hour and require that the employee be there for a set shift then pay them per hour, not per service hour. Management and franchise owners should be required to learn as much as possible about massage therapy including some hands on training. We love to help our clients and love our profession and deserve to be treated as professionals.

    Pros

You get a lot of massages, getting booked is not an issue

    Cons

Therapist are overworked and underpaid. At the low pay rate many massages need to be done 6-7 a day, 5 days a week, to make enough to support oneself if tips are good enough, and that is just to make ends meet in a low income lifestyle. Management in usually young and unexperienced. Therapists are usually sad and frustrated, usually because they are completly exhausted. They make a competitive enviroment by posting client's comments in the breakroom rather than telling therapists individually. They will give you all deep tissues, up to 6 a day, on large men and you cannot go deep enough for them. Arms, hands get worn down. Benefits cost a lot of money. Only get hourly if it equals more than what you earned from massage you NEVER get both.

    Advice to Management

Pay your therapists better and stop over working them
