I have been working at MathWorks full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

* Lots of different product areas provide opportunities for technical growth and diversity
* Mostly interesting work
* Strong people in all areas of the company
* Good benefits
* Good work/life balance

Cons

* Can be easy to pigeon-hole oneself technically (especially with MATLAB)
* No remote work allowed
* One too many levels of management, too many meetings
* Micro-management of worker's time and tasks
* Unclear vision with respect to web and open-source

Advice to Management

It seems that in 1992 or so, MathWorks must have looked at what it was doing, loved it, and "froze" this as the "company culture". The problem is that when these things are put into training and imposed top-down, they no longer count as culture but instead as company policy. My advice is to benchmark these policies with modern, successful software companies and adjust them, dropping the pretense that things like "no remote work" is culture that we all embrace at the company.

    Pros

    Frequently get to work on new technologies and projects. The company culture promotes collaboration and a positive environment. The company also invests in employees by providing excellent technical training.

    Cons

    There doesn't appear to be a lot of opportunities for advancement. However, since every employee's voice is heard during development, you can contribute greatly without being a manager.

    I have been working at MathWorks full-time

    Pros

    The campus looks awesome. Office are also very nice. For the most part, coworkers are friendly and engaging. Nice perks, such as free breakfast on Wednesday and free cookies on Friday afternoon.

    Cons

    A lot of project time is spent trying to appease everyone involved. There is also little concern for individuals dissatisfied by their work. Or at least, there is little action done regarding such matters. Young and enthusiastic individuals tend to be taken for granted.

    Advice to Management

    Put people in charge with the skills, not seniority.
