I worked at Mattress Firm full-time

Pros

Good income but it is based on draw, not a salaried position.

Cons

50 hrs a week is the norm but on Holidays (which is at least one weekend a month) you must week six days and 12 hour days because they extend hours and do not rotate opening and closing.

Advice to Management

Find a way to become more work - lifed balanced

    Pros

    Great experience in business and relationships. The company provides a win/win for anyone wanting to gain experience or move up in the company. Many career options and they promote from within first.

    Cons

    Long Hours and the work-life balance is difficult because of the retail set up. There is not a lot of freedom to do anything else on the days that you work because you are often in the store for 10-12 hours not including commuting.

    I worked at Mattress Firm full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    A good experience and sales training for novice sales people or for those with more experience but without lofty career goals. Pay is in comparison better than most retail environment opportunities, but in the lower end of other many other sales opportunities outside of retail. Great degree of personal autonomy can be a big plus for independent types who require little supervision, though some more extroverted coworkers have found the sporadic/occasional isolation difficult to handle. For those who require more leadership and supervision to succeed, might not be a good choice as bad habits can proliferate without a disciplined approach.

    Cons

    A lot of dissatisfaction among the sales staff stems from poor life-work balance: long hours even for retail (open to close on daily basis is required with minimum 10.5 hrs daily, except Sunday which is 6.5 hrs., and 5 - 6 day work week; longer days and weeks in peak seasons and sales events, or if you have late customers, which can happen any day). Typical retail expectations: evenings, weekends, and holidays. Little opportunity for outside career development above bachelor's degree level due to long hours and also poor life/work balance. Corporate culture is a bit insufferable unless you have a high tolerance for incessant, superficial cheer-leading and obsequious behavior. Opportunity for advancement is touted by corporate as unparalleled, but the reality is that unless you have a personal relationship with a corporate or field management team member due to rampant favoritism and nepotism, you may end up very frustrated. Those in a clique with the right people, or graduating from the "right" school (most notably SFA, the CEO's alma mater) have repeatedly been fast-tracked regardless of merit and experience, though some promotion through merit does occur, depending on the management team members you are exposed to. If this is your goal, then I recommend shameless self-promotion and networking. My observation in the many years I worked there is that the most conscientious individuals have at times been made to feel that they were at a disadvantage.

    Advice to Management

    Leadership of this company has a tendency toward what is best described as pure hubris, that seems to permeate every department starting from the top and trickling down. The favoritism and nepotism here are unparalleled. Good people here become frustrated and leave for better opportunities. Often the ones who stay are those more willing to accept compromise in their professional lives for a variety of reasons. If this were my company, I would require each individual at corporate to be sent off to a market outside of Houston, to spend at least one month "in the trenches" on the sales floor, and not just waltzing in and out - I mean working the hours along with the face of the company - their sales people. My top recommendation is this: cease the nepotism!!!!!! It is truly sickening and a constant source of frustration for those not in the clique. Finally, about training: your current push for daily training is good especially for those with limited sales skills, but the level of training offers little value for the really experienced sales people.
