I worked at McAfee full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Global and well recognized brand
Free coffee/tea/drinks everyday and breakfast on Thursdays
Nice cafeteria, office space, and cubicles
Big budget to create with
CEO's are wonderful, personable, and easy to talk to

Cons

Management is very old school, the complete opposite of a flat organization
A lot of politics, red tape, and the company doesn't feel like it's innovating
You will have meetings about meetings, and projects and decisions happen very slowly
Difficult to work cross-functionally

Advice to Management

Be more open to the ideas of those below you. Managers should be required to take leadership courses. Stay up to date with emerging trends. Need better information flow across departments.

    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at McAfee full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Overall, nice and friendly people to work with
    - Nice building
    - Might be a good place for a new developer to get his feet wet, then move on
    - Large, well known company, decent products
    - Owned by Intel
    - Dev teams collaborate well

    Cons

    - Large, well known company, that is slowly falling behind
    - No concept of team building within the dev group. Managers do not interact with the employees much (only to criticize).
    - A lot of meetings about meetings
    - Below average pay
    - Minimal training opportunities. Very stingy on the budgets for training, etc.
    - Minimal, if any, recognition for a job well done. They WILL, however, let you know when you screw up.
    - Extremely poor project planning
    - Antiquated hardware and software for development (interestingly, the spreadsheet-reading managers always have the latest laptops, though)
    - Dev managers have no decision making power. They must ask for approval for everything. They seem to just care about their own self with no regards to the people reporting to them. We are all just warm bodies.
    - Dev managers do not know the meaning of "how to motivate employees" (nor do they care), nor the meaning of "accountability".

    Advice to Management

    - You have too many dev managers that seemingly do nothing. In fact, too many managers period.
    - You should also do less talking about what you're going to do to improve things, and actually do it!

I worked at McAfee (More than a year)

    Pros

I really enjoyed the people and the commute! The building had a great cafeteria and they did some really fun things for their employees like "bring your kid to work" day.

    Cons

Many people are in manager level or above postions who aren't effective leaders. There is a lot of politcs and backstabbing and corporate climbing.

    Advice to Management

Learn to lead in a way that inspires your employees rather than makes them fearful of losing their job every day.
