Pros

There is plenty of variety in jobs and you gain lots of experience in all audit sections very quickly. They are pretty flexible about time off when needed for family and will allow you to work from home if you need to stay home for the plumber, etc. Lots of client interaction. All in all, it is a good place to work to get your time in to obtain your CPA license.

Cons

Busy season can be grueling if you don't schedule a short vacation somewhere in the middle. I stress short, otherwise you fall behind quickly in work during this time. There is little to no training when you start and upper level staff are too busy to train. High turnover, though there always is in public accounting. Can be very stressful at times. Incentive pay is non-existant in the lower levels no matter how well you do. Job performance reviews are a joke. They seem to have eliminated peer reviews and reviews of your supers, managers and directors.

Advice to Management

Career advisors and mentors are a joke - they don't have time to mentor!

    Pros

The Firm has alot of positive initiatives going on. The Firm is always moving forward but at times it is difficult to keep up.

    Cons

It has become a very big firm - big firm mentality. I don't know whether that is a good or bad.

    Advice to Management

Too many chiefs. Too many committees. Too many layers of upper management. To much overhead in that area of the firm. Too much nonbillable time at the partner level

  2. "Great Culture, compared to other Big 4 firms"

    Pros

McGladrey & Pullen has the best cultural environment I have yet to see in a public accounting firm.

    Cons

The down side to M&P is the poor mid-level management communication and ability to execute projects in a timely manner. Also, in many departments there are certain cliques (public accounting this is the norm) that seem to be able to determine the fate of other employees based on their ability to fit into their cliques, when in fact such decisions should be based on merit.

    Advice to Management

Ask for upward feedback on your seniors and managers. Most are respectful and knowledgeable but there are a few that are verbally abusive and add little to no value to the firm.
