I have been working at McKinsey & Company full-time

Pros

Unbelievable learning experience

Ability to make a difference

Great opportunity for advancement

Cons

Some partners are disengaged until the customer complains; then instead of taking personal responsibility - they blame the AP and EM. They seem to have forgotten that the buck stops with them.

The above problem, though, is in part due to the fact that the Firm's stated value of "obligation to dissent" is no longer emphasized; as a result the AP and or EM typically don't complain due to fear of retribution. I am a Senior EM and so I know about this first hand.

Although travel is 4-5 days/week - that it is NOT the problem. The true problem is the 18-20 hour work days - day after day. Sleep deprivation is major problem.

Advice to Management

Human capital is the most important resource a company has. In order to retain the best talent, McKinsey needs to refocus on the original professional standards of the Firm and strive for a work-life balance.
