I have been working at McMenamins full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

The company attracts and hires people of good heart. Good benefits, if you are able to go your first year without insurance, cool historical buildings to work in

Cons

The brothers and GM's are all about cutting, cutting and more cutting of labor and have no interest in hearing from employees any suggestions for improvements or their frustrations. Mike has made it very clear to his GM's that he has no interest in hearing about problems associated with implementation of new policies he comes up with. Long term employees have learned to just numb themselves to the daily frustrations

Advice to Management

Your employees really do want to do a good job for you, but the attitude that employees are at best a pain in the ***** and at worst, virtually an enemy to be dealt with as little as possible other than being told to "we don't want to hear it, just do your job", turnover has noticeably increased over the years and morale is pretty sad

I worked at McMenamins full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great coworkers, laid-back environment. They offer benefits after six or so months which is rare in the service industry.

    Cons

Company goals and metrics change from month to month. It is nearly impossible while working at one of the smaller pubs to keep upper management happy from month to month. One month service will be an issue, so you increase the number of hours (it's hard to provide good service when you are covering seven or more tables during a rush). Next month they complain about labor being to high. Rinse, wash, repeat.

    Advice to Management

Understand that if you cut hours to get the labor percentage down that the service is going to reflect that. When you are understaffed it's impossible to provide good service.

I have been working at McMenamins full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, decent money, cool buildings, nice history, lots of locations so working close to home is a possibility. Good beer.

    Cons

Constantly understaffed. Poor upper management. Lazy pub managers. Unrealistic expectations for labor, and the service expected with low labor.

    Advice to Management

Take a look at the industry before setting numerical goals.
